India and Poland will intensify cooperation in agriculture

An Indian delegation led by Union Secretary for Agriculture, Mr. S.K. Pattanayak, visited Poland from August 29 to 31, 2016, with the aim to intensify agriculture sector cooperation between the two countries. The delegation which included agriculture expert Dr. V.K. Srivastava, visited at the invitation of Polish Undersecretary for Agriculture, Ms. Ewa Lech. The Indian team had detailed discussions with Ms. Lech on a range of issues, including ratcheting up the level of trade in agri-food products, signing an MOU in the field of agriculture, and stepping up scientific and technological cooperation in agricultural areas. The delegation, which included Ambassador Ajay Bisaria, also had a productive meeting with the Polish Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Krzysztof Jurgiel. The Indian team later met with the management board of the ‘Main Inspectorate of Plant Health and Seed Inspection’ and visited the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. The team interacted with several Polish agriculture experts and visited apple orchards and storage facilities.

  1. Apples were both on the menu and agenda during the talks. As a result of the discussions, India is likely to soon bite into Polish apples. Poland requested access for Polish apples to the vast Indian market and made proposals on “cold treatment” of apples prior to their shipment to India. The Indian side agreed to positively consider these proposals with a view to clearing the way for Polish apple exports to India.

  1. India is also a major global exporter of agricultural products. The Indian side offered Indian mangoes, castor oil, soyabean oil cakes, maize and bananas to Poland. To continue the momentum of agriculture sector cooperation, a high-level Polish delegation will visit the Annapoorna Food Fair in India on 22-24 September 2016.
